Sgroi didn't fight that much, actually. He brought a lot of energy and some skill . . . the problem was when he forgot his energy and skill in the AHL. He was so certain he was going to stay there, I guess he forgot to pack it?
I'm pretty certain that his whole schtick in the newspaper when he came back was just an act to get the fans wound up -- and it worked perfectly. That was an incredibly fun game. I mean, maybe he was seriously offended, but I think he was just playing it up. You don't get that a lot in the minors, really. At least not like that.

Brian_V Nah, he was so bummed because Syracuse didn't want to keep his goon a*s, he threw his energy down the toilet when he got back to Johnstown. I remember the game he came back from the AHL he went to the bench and sat down. He had a look of disapointment and dispair on his face like his whole life got flushed down the toilet. He was probally saying to himself. What am I doing here? I'm 30 years old and I can't crack the AHL roster beyond a PTO contract. What have I done wrong? We know what he done wrong but it hasn't sunk in his head yet, there's not too many chances for goon players in hockey these days.

I would have to disagree about that fact on a small note. Last season he didnt help out much but when Ian Herbers made the trade to get him when we were struggling bad in the 07-08 season he came in here and instantly lit a fire that we were missing. He had 25 points for us down the stretch and became a key part of our run we made at the time. Thats the Mike Sgroi that I knew and loved to watch.

I have to agree with you on that one. The guy could really play when he wanted to. I really enjoyed watching Sgroi and J Desrochers when they played together. And I can understand him being down and out when he got sent back here. That may have been his last shot. As far as his fights, there were just not many guys at this level that were stupid enough to go with him. I still think Sgroi's biggest drawback was his temper....although Herbers seemed to do a good job of getting him to keep that under control after the 10 game sentence he got a few years back.

Sgroi was actually battling Mirasty in Syracuse for the enforcer role and breaking his hand didn't help matters. IMO if he doesn't break his hand in that exhibition game then he stays the whole season in Syracuse.

Getting back to Mr Sladok, lets face it....nearly everybody likes to watch the tough guys in action. Glad to see we are signing some players, including a "character" player. He will help put some people in the seats, as well as the scorers that have been signed. I hope we get a coaching announcement soon.
Geez, it seems like a long time, I'm ready for hockey.
